MicrosoftDirectX’s free multimedia interface is a free collection of APIs for image and sound programming. This allows developers, especially game developers, to easily create full games running on Windows. Most users don’t even notice that DirectX works – it just works when needed without being notified. Otherwise, interacting with it is a bit more complicated and requires a programming tool (function () {(‘overview-application-page-desktop’);}) to control the sound and graphics; DirectX is a technical tool that helps game developers communicate with sound and graphics cards. While it can be installed on any computer, most users never need it. It works when you play a game made with DirectX and that’s it. You have to get to know it better if you want to program it yourself. This category has one of the most flexible enforcement processes. What is DirectX used for? DirectX is a set of Windows interfaces. Developers program the DirectX API, which allows their applications – often games – to communicate correctly with sound and graphics cards. Sound and video card manufacturers, in turn, recognize DirectX, so they know what to do if a program created with DirectX has access to its functions. Do you already have DirectX? Since DirectX doesn’t have an interface like other programs (for example, it doesn’t appear in the list of programs), you’ll need to get some more specs to see if it’s already installed on your computer. Follow these steps to check: Click Start, click Run dxdiag type, and then click OK. On the System tab, select the version of DirectX displayed in the DirectX version bar. Check the information for each tab version on the different tabs. DirectX file When you have finished checking versions, click Exit DirectX Setup. If you find that DirectX is not installed on your computer (or if the version is very old), you will need to download DirectX again to use it. Downloading is easy and as you would expect: you download and run .exe as usual. Installation is slow, which can be a bit tedious, and – be careful – the application tries to install Bing during installation. How do I open the DirectX control panel? Since DirectX is not a regular program, you cannot open it in the usual way. Instead, click Start and type dxdiag. The computer asks if you want to run DirectX. A window will open – this is a very traditional Windows interface. All the information it provides is for informational purposes only – lots of details about your system, display settings, visualization features and drivers, audio information and current input devices. This information is not communicated – there is an error window and if you program and make an error, an error will appear. You go back and fix it and the error disappears. Who needs DirectX? There are two situations when you need DirectX. If you play games on your computer that require DirectX to work. You may already be here. If you are programming things that require access to sound and graphics cards, you may also need DirectX.

Keep in mind that DirectX is not the only toolof this type. There are other APIs that interact with graphics cards, and many of them are more modern. You can compare it with a real application, such as Runtime, a specific technology that has been in use for years and is still strong. Graphics and sound technology work very well (so it’s still relevant even if it’s very old), and the interface is very useful albeit very old-fashioned. But most of us never see it – if you don’t program, you don’t even have to open it because it just runs in the background without you noticing DirectX isn’t really the software you may or may not want. If it is necessary you have to install it and it is quite painless. Recent changes The latest version of DirectX improves compatibility with Windows 10 and adds support for Sharing Shading (VDS). Other recent versions have added support for DirectX quick tracking, deep boundary testing and programmable MSAA.
